If you are a non-EU/EFTA applicant, build your Swiss master’s funding plan without assuming that a part-time job will start on arrival. Permission, study compatibility and recruitment are separate steps. An advertised work opportunity cannot settle all three, and an hourly limit is not a promise of paid hours.
This guide focuses on supplementary work during study, using the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration’s current public explanation. An Indian citizen without a separate status changing the applicable route should investigate the non-EU/EFTA rules for their own situation. EU/EFTA arrangements and individual permit conditions need separate verification.
What the current federal explanation says
The SEM working FAQ, last modified on 5 July 2026 and checked on 9 October 2026, says cantonal authorities may approve supplementary work for foreign students studying at a university or university of applied sciences, subject to conditions.
Its non-EU/EFTA section describes work beginning no earlier than six months after the course starts, with a maximum of 15 hours per week outside holidays. The university must confirm compatibility with study and timely completion; the employer must apply, and pay and working conditions must comply with the rules. Confirm your institution, course and permit situation with the competent canton before relying on this route.
Those are conditions for possible approval. They do not tell you when an employer will hire you, how many shifts will be offered or what you will earn. Do not replace the actual requirements with a social-media claim of immediate work or a different weekly limit.
Make a four-stage timeline
On one page, separate the following stages:
- Before arrival: confirm the applicable official route and fund the required study and living commitments.
- Initial study period: plan without supplementary job income and learn the actual academic schedule.
- Potential work application: establish study compatibility, employer responsibility and the cantonal process before starting work.
- Approved work, if secured: record actual conditions, hours, pay dates and the effect on your course workload.
Write “unknown” beside a stage with no evidence. Do not turn the earliest possible eligibility point into a job start date. If an employer conversation begins earlier, it still does not establish that you can legally start a shift then.
This timeline is a planning tool, not a permit assessment. The school’s international office can help identify the right route; the competent authorities determine the applicable requirements. Obtain current confirmation when your specific programme and location are known.
Keep a no-job funding version
Prepare two versions of your cash-flow plan. The first contains confirmed funding and the full costs you need to cover without a job. The second may explore hypothetical later earnings, clearly marked as conditional and kept out of the confirmed-funding total.
Do not subtract an estimated wage from a fee invoice due before that wage could exist. Nor should an advertised hourly rate be multiplied by the maximum weekly allowance as though all those hours are guaranteed. The original planning question is whether the first version works if recruitment is delayed or no suitable work is secured.
Use our master’s budget beyond tuition guide for cost categories. The article supplies no current Swiss wage, living-cost estimate or personal proof-of-funds amount; verify those separately for your actual course and canton rather than inserting a convenient national average.
Test study compatibility before pursuing a role
Create a sample week using the programme’s real timetable when available. Include classes, preparation, assessments, commuting, meals and rest. Then examine where a possible shift could fit. A legal maximum and a sustainable personal workload are different constraints.
If a hypothetical role requires a late finish, ask how you would travel home and prepare for the next day. If assessment weeks are intensive, ask about flexibility before accepting a commitment. These questions do not imply that every campus or employer offers the same arrangements.
Discuss the schedule with the university when seeking the required compatibility confirmation. Our assessment and workload guide can help you identify the information missing from a promotional timetable.
Keep placements and graduate plans separate
A curricular internship and supplementary work are different questions. Ask the programme team for the exact internship route, assessment conditions and permit arrangements; do not assume the part-time-work explanation covers it. Likewise, plans to work after graduation require a separate current eligibility and employer assessment.
A school’s career-service access, internship examples or alumni story can help you formulate research questions. They cannot certify your future permit, salary or job. Use the exact qualification, campus and student category when asking about opportunities.
Your next useful step is a one-page timeline with your programme, canton, study start, confirmed funding and three unresolved approval questions. Bring that to the school and competent authority, and keep their written answers with your plan. You can explore work opportunities while making an education decision that remains financially understandable if employment does not arrive when hoped.
