An EPFL Master Excellence Fellowship is conditional funding across a study plan, not an unconditional promise to finance every semester. Its published second-year renewal rules require both academic performance and qualifying credits. Check those conditions before treating a first-year award as confirmed money for the rest of the degree.
This guide uses official EPFL information checked on 16 October 2026. It focuses on funding continuity and a practical contingency record. It does not assess a student's eligibility, calculate selection chances or promise renewal.
Separate selection from continuation
EPFL's fellowship overview advertises CHF 10,000 per semester and a limited number of awards. It distinguishes being considered for a fellowship from being selected. Its second-year renewal condition is also separate from the initial application assessment.
For renewal, the application and renewal page requires at least a 5.0 average on the six-point scale and at least 50 qualifying credits at the end of the first year, after results are published. Both conditions matter. Completing credits alone does not establish renewal, and a strong average alone does not fill a credit shortfall.
The page says the average is ECTS-weighted and includes all numerical grades from the chosen courses and exams in the first master year. It excludes internship credits from the qualifying-credit requirement, as well as language courses, admission courses and courses outside the study plan. Do not count every activity on your calendar towards the 50-credit condition.
Build a credit map before relying on year-two money
Make a private list of the actual courses and assessed work planned for the first year. Record their credits, place in the study plan, assessment timing and whether you have confirmed that they count for the fellowship requirement. Keep uncertain items marked for clarification.
Then compare that map with the programme's progression requirements. The fellowship is not permission to choose an academically unsuitable timetable merely to chase a number. A module may be important for learning or a prerequisite without answering every funding condition.
For Computer Science students, the internship-before-thesis planner addresses another sequencing decision. Use the relevant Section's guidance when fitting an internship around the academic year. Internship completion, thesis eligibility and fellowship renewal are different requirements; none should be assumed from the others.
Check how many semesters are actually covered
The fellowship FAQ describes coverage of up to three or four semesters depending on the programme, including the master project period. For the final instalment, it requires proof of official registration in the master project. A headline maximum is not automatic payment for any additional semester.
The FAQ also says funding for a double degree is paid only for semesters spent at EPFL, subject to renewal requirements. It describes suspension in specified circumstances and says payments are suspended if the master cycle is extended. Check the actual award communication and programme situation before budgeting a leave, mobility period or extension.
Do not assume that an extra academic semester comes with an extra fellowship instalment. Ask what happens to the funding if a required component or the project begins later than expected. Keep the answer with the award evidence rather than relying on another student's account.
Keep arrival cash and housing separate
The FAQ says payments are made at semester start into a Swiss bank or postal account and advises recipients to bring enough funds for the first month's expenses because initial processing may take time. A real award can therefore still leave an upfront cash requirement for travel, housing and arrival.
The application page describes reservation of a student room for external candidates, while making students responsible for expenses including tuition and rent. A room reservation benefit is not free accommodation. Obtain the actual offer, rent, payment dates and conditions before changing the housing budget.
Use the full-budget guide to keep gross costs, confirmed instalments and cash timing distinct. Do not close a shortfall with an assumed internship wage, assistantship or future job. A fellowship supports study; it does not establish employer selection or permission to work.
Write a continuation and fallback record
Use five fields: confirmed award and covered semesters; qualifying-credit plan; assessment and renewal decision timing; upfront costs and payment dates; and funds or decisions needed if renewal does not occur.
As a planning exercise, compare a renewed-funding scenario with a no-renewal scenario for the remaining study period. Label the latter a contingency, not a forecast of failure. If the unfunded scenario is unaffordable, resolve that exposure before making commitments that depend on a second-year award.
The official pages contain differing notification-period descriptions. Check the actual current communication rather than deriving a personal result date from those summaries. The useful next action is a review of the credit map, award terms and fallback funding—not counting future instalments as money already received.
