A course shortlist and a post-study work plan answer different questions. The first asks what you will learn and whether you can enter the programme. The second asks whether the exact course and your eventual study record meet an immigration route's conditions. Keep both questions visible before paying an application fee or deposit.
This guide is for a prospective master's student comparing Canadian options. It uses IRCC's official pages checked on 7 October 2026 and provides a research worksheet, not a personal eligibility decision. Rules may change before you graduate. Admission, a study permit, a post-graduation work permit and a job are separate outcomes; none follows automatically from a brochure.
Identify the school, campus and actual award
Start with the exact programme page, rather than a shortened course name in a message. Record the institution, campus, award title, normal duration, delivery arrangement and proposed start date. Is the award a master's degree, or a graduate certificate or diploma? Similar marketing language is insufficient evidence that two qualifications use the same rules.
IRCC's designated learning institutions list identifies schools approved to host international students. Search the relevant province and match the school and campus, recording the DLI number. Its PGWP section warns that not every programme at a listed institution is eligible; inspect any programme-specific details.
Save the source link and check date beside your entry. If names or locations differ between the offer, programme page and official listing, leave the item unresolved and ask the institution to reconcile them. A familiar university name should not close a question about a different delivery location or organisation.
Read the degree-specific rule without turning it into a promise
IRCC's PGWP duration guidance says an eligible master's degree of at least eight months, or 900 hours for Quebec programmes, can support an application for a three-year PGWP even when the degree lasts less than two years. All other eligibility requirements apply. This provision does not cover certificates or diplomas, and passport validity can limit the issued permit's duration.
Use that distinction to ask a better question: “What is the formally awarded qualification and which current IRCC category applies?” Avoid writing “three years guaranteed” in a budget or family plan. A possible permit period is also not a forecast of employment, salary, savings or permanent residence.
Make the personal conditions a separate research task
The current IRCC eligibility page includes full-time study, with a final-semester exception; applying within 180 days of completion confirmation; and a study permit valid at some point during those 180 days. For master's graduates, current applications require CLB 7 in English or NCLC 7 in French in all four language areas; there is no field-of-study requirement. These are selected checks, not the complete eligibility test. Previous PGWP use, distance study, delivery arrangements and other exclusions also matter. Read the full current page for the circumstances that apply to you.
The practical lesson is to keep university admission evidence and immigration evidence in different folders. An admission-language result should not be assumed to settle the future permit's test, validity or documentary requirements. Before arranging a test, follow IRCC's linked language instructions and verify the accepted evidence for your application date.
Build a shortlist worksheet with unresolved items visible
For each option, create the following record in your existing planning notes. These are suggested research fields, not an official application form:
- **Course identity:** exact award, school, campus, start date and official course link.
- **Institution check:** DLI number, matching location, official listing and date checked.
- **Programme check:** evidence for the exact programme's PGWP status, including any limits or delivery questions.
- **Study plan:** duration, in-person/online arrangement and questions about interruptions, transfers or overseas study.
- **Personal review:** applicable IRCC conditions, evidence still needed and who can clarify an unresolved point.
- **Financial plan:** confirmed funds and full study costs, without relying on future job earnings.
Use three simple labels: documented, needs clarification, and not yet checked. Attach the evidence to the label. A tick without a source is easy to misread later, particularly when a family is comparing several offers.
Ask one precise programme question
If the exact delivery arrangement remains unclear, a suggested enquiry is: “I am considering [award], at [campus], starting [date]. Please confirm the awarding institution, programme duration and delivery organisation, and direct me to your current published information on this programme's PGWP status. My unresolved point is [specific discrepancy].”
Send that through the university's actual official route yourself. A university response can clarify its programme; it does not replace IRCC's rules or establish an immigration decision. Keep the dated response with the official pages and revisit the research before a consequential payment and before the later permit application.
Finally, compare academic fit through the existing master's course comparison guide and affordability through the full-course budget guide. The useful outcome is a shortlist with clear evidence and open questions, rather than a course chosen solely for a promised post-study outcome.
