# UTokyo Science research students: a kenkyusei place is not master's admission

- Description: Check UTokyo Science's April 2027 self-supported research-student route without confusing supervisor consent, non-degree acceptance and master's admission.

At the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Science, a Graduate International Research Student, or kenkyusei, conducts supervised research through a non-degree route. Completing that period does not award a master's degree or qualification. If your goal is a master's, investigate the degree application separately before treating a research-student place as a step that automatically converts into admission.

This guide concerns the School of Science's published 2027 international research-student guidance, checked on 27 October 2026\. It does not apply another UTokyo graduate school's procedures or an individual supervisor's availability to your case.

## Separate the research route from the degree goal

The university's [graduate admissions overview](https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/prospective-students/grad%5Fadmissions.html?ref=peridot.works) distinguishes regular graduate enrolment from international research-student status. The latter does not award a degree or qualification after the research term.

The [School of Science's research-student page](https://www.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp/en/admission/research-students.html?ref=peridot.works) also says applicants can apply directly to a master's or doctoral course without first being kenkyusei. This does not establish that a particular applicant meets the degree route's selection requirements. It means you should compare actual routes, rather than assume a non-degree stage is universally compulsory.

Write down the degree you ultimately want, its department and the relevant admissions process. On a separate line, write the purpose of any proposed non-degree research period. If those lines are not connected by verified requirements, keep the connection as a hypothesis.

## Supervisor consent and admission are different records

Science asks prospective research students to obtain supervisor consent before applying, but explicitly says that consent does not guarantee acceptance. Treat an informal indication, the formal research application and its selection result as separate states.

Your planning record can have three columns:

- Research fit investigated: the question, methods and preparation you can explain.
- Required supervisor consent: what is actually confirmed and what remains conditional.
- Formal application and decision: the exact category, submitted evidence and official result.

Do not mark the last column complete because the second contains a positive response. Our [supervisor-fit guide](https://www.peridot.works/research-supervisor-fit/) helps organise the academic investigation without presenting a lab description as an available place.

This article does not contact a supervisor, submit an application or assess your academic equivalence. Use the university's current instructions for your own application; avoid sending private documents to unrelated intermediaries.

## Use the deadline for the correct category

For self-supported applicants seeking research-student enrolment on 1 April 2027, the current Science page gives an application window from 23 October to 17:00 on 13 November 2026, Japan Standard Time. It says all application documents must arrive by the specified time. Dates are subject to change.

That is the research-student window for this category, not a general master's application deadline. Embassy-recommended MEXT applicants and the other research entry period have different instructions. Do not combine their calendar, funding status or forms with the self-supported route.

Copy the applicable category and timezone into your [application calendar](https://www.peridot.works/masters-application-calendar/), then add the separate degree-route deadline once verified. Set an earlier personal preparation target; it does not change the official deadline.

## Do not budget the non-degree period as completed master's study

Science describes normal research-student enrolment as six months, with extensions subject to approval. Its FAQ says research students are in principle not eligible to attend classes or earn academic credits. Do not assume that time spent in a laboratory shortens a later master's.

Build separate budget phases: the proposed research period, any gap or extension you may need to investigate, and a degree period only if separately admitted. For each, record confirmed funding and the costs still to be verified. Do not insert an extension, scholarship or later degree place as an assured event.

Our [budget beyond tuition guide](https://www.peridot.works/masters-budget-beyond-tuition/) can help keep those periods separate. No fee total or scholarship availability is confirmed by this article.

## Compare the alternatives before committing

A useful decision sheet has two routes: direct degree application, and non-degree research followed by a separately assessed degree application. For each, ask what academic purpose it serves, what selection remains, which dates apply, and what you would do if the next application did not succeed.

The point is not to rank the routes for every student. A research period may have a specific learning purpose, but it should be named and funded as that purpose. A planned master's is still a future decision until its own requirements and offer are confirmed.

Your next action is to complete that two-route sheet using the current Science instructions and the exact degree department's guidance. Resolve the earliest uncertain link before treating the whole sequence as one accepted programme.
