# US master's planning: separate OPT authorisation from the unemployment clock

- Description: For a US master’s, distinguish OPT authorisation, the cumulative unemployment limit and a funded job search before assuming a year of earnings.
- Author: Santosh Srinivas

Eligible F-1 students can apply for up to 12 months of Optional Practical Training, including after a non-STEM master's. The 90-day figure is the cumulative unemployment limit during initial post-completion OPT, not the total duration of OPT. A qualifying STEM extension adds a separate application and eligibility test; it does not turn an uncertain job search into guaranteed employment.

This distinction matters before choosing a course and again before graduation. A family may budget around a supposed year of earnings, while the student hears that there are only three months to find work. Those statements describe different things. Neither establishes when a particular student may start working, how much authorised time remains or whether an employer will hire them.

Scope: general F-1 planning, checked 20 October 2026 against the linked USCIS, ICE and DHS guidance. Individual eligibility, dates and reporting must be checked with the institution's designated school official, or DSO. This article does not calculate anyone's immigration status.

## Keep three records separate

[USCIS's OPT guidance](https://www.uscis.gov/working-in-the-united-states/students-and-exchange-visitors/optional-practical-training-opt-for-f-1-students?ref=peridot.works) describes temporary employment directly related to the student's major. Eligible students may apply for up to 12 months, but pre-completion OPT can reduce the post-completion time available at the same educational level. Do not assume every new master's creates a fresh, untouched allowance.

The first record is therefore eligibility and prior use: programme, educational level, current F-1 position and any earlier practical training. The second is the actual authorisation: approval, Employment Authorization Document or EAD, and applicable start and end dates. The third is the record of qualifying employment and unemployment within post-completion OPT.

A graduation date, a DSO recommendation, a submitted application and an approved work period are different events. USCIS states that pre- or post-completion OPT cannot begin until the application is approved and the EAD received. Confirm the authorised start date as well before beginning work; filing alone is not permission.

## Ninety days is cumulative, not a fresh allowance between jobs

The [DHS unemployment-counter guidance](https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/sevis-help-hub/student-records/fm-student-employment/unemployment-counter?ref=peridot.works) gives 90 days for post-completion OPT. Its SEVIS explanation looks back to the actual OPT start date and counts days without employer information. Accurate, timely employment records therefore matter alongside the actual work.

For a simple illustration, suppose a record shows 35 unemployment days before a first qualifying role and 20 more between roles. That is 55 accumulated days, leaving 35 against a 90-day limit, assuming those are the applicable and correctly recorded days. This is arithmetic, not an example of an approved case or advice on which dates count for an individual.

Ask the DSO to check the actual dates, employment details and any discrepancy promptly. An inaccurate record needs correction through the appropriate route; inserting a nominal employer or assuming that any activity qualifies does not solve the underlying requirement.

## A STEM extension has its own conditions

Certain qualifying STEM degrees may support an application for an additional 24 months. This is conditional, not an automatic benefit of any course using technology or analytics in its title. [ICE's practical-training guidance](https://www.ice.gov/sevis/practical-training?ref=peridot.works) identifies requirements including a qualifying degree, an E-Verify employer and the student/employer Form I-983 training plan.

DHS states a combined unemployment limit of 150 days for post-completion OPT plus STEM OPT. That includes unemployment already accrued in the initial period. It is not 150 new days added after using 90\. Keep the initial record when discussing an extension, and verify the exact degree designation and current application requirements rather than relying on a brochure label.

## Build the employment plan without assuming a salary

Permission enables certain work; it does not establish vacancies, employer interest, sponsorship or a first payday. The job must satisfy the applicable OPT requirements, including its relationship to the major. Evidence of course admission or a careers-service appointment does not demonstrate that a particular role qualifies.

Before paying a deposit, compare the actual course with the tasks in roles you want to pursue. Keep the search geographically realistic and investigate employer requirements separately. The existing [graduate job-search log](https://www.peridot.works/masters-graduate-job-search-log/) can organise preparation and applications; it is not a substitute for the DSO's authorisation and reporting checks.

For the family budget, keep confirmed funds separate from unconfirmed earnings. Use the [same-loan career scenarios](https://www.peridot.works/loan-repayment-same-terms-scenarios/) to test delayed earnings or an India return without inventing new repayment terms. A possible authorised work period should not be entered as guaranteed paid employment.

## Your next action

Make a one-page record with four headings: prior OPT/CPT use; actual authorisation dates; cumulative unemployment and employment reporting; and funded living costs if paid work is delayed. Bring the immigration entries to the DSO for verification before making a work-start or status decision. This helps the student and family discuss the same timeline without confusing an employment opportunity, a legal limit and a cash-flow assumption.
