- Description: Check BLOG eligibility, application status, offer priority, reservation payment and lease guarantee before treating UNIGE housing as secured.

Registering for University of Geneva housing does not secure a room. For a master’s student and family, the useful planning sequence is eligibility, a complete application, an actual offer, a confirmed reservation and the lease conditions for receiving keys. Keep those stages separate before treating accommodation as settled.

This guide concerns housing managed by UNIGE’s Bureau des logements, or BLOG. It uses the university’s current guidance and linked student allocation directive, checked on 15 October 2026\. It is not a live room listing, an individual eligibility decision or a promise of accommodation in Geneva.

## Check which institutions the scheme serves

The [student housing directive](https://www.unige.ch/logements/application/files/6217/9127/2082/Directive%5Fdattribution%5Fetudiant-es%5F2026%5Finscription%5Fen%5Fcontinu.pdf?ref=peridot.works) describes eligible adult bachelor’s and master’s students enrolled at UNIGE or the Graduate Institute, as well as specified UNIGE exchange students. It excludes people enrolled only in continuing education. Income and parental residence conditions also apply.

Studying at another institution somewhere in Geneva does not by itself establish access to this scheme. Verify your actual institution, course status and personal conditions before using BLOG accommodation in your budget. Do not turn the university’s housing information into a general promise for every Swiss private-school applicant.

The public page and application documents use both annual-income and monthly-attestation wording. Ask BLOG which current evidence and calculation basis it requires for your circumstances. Do not convert a threshold yourself or assume that meeting one condition settles the whole application.

## A completed application is still an application

The [French housing guidance](https://www.unige.ch/logements/blog/conditions-acces-inscriptions?ref=peridot.works) says registration on the common portal does not guarantee housing. BLOG reviews complete requests and communicates eligibility before registering eligible applications. Keep the confirmation you actually receive, rather than treating account creation or an uploaded document as allocation.

The directive addresses first-year applicants who cannot yet present a final enrolment certificate: it describes an enrolment decision at application and further proof requirements during the move-in process. Check the documents applicable to your actual stage and the deadline for supplying the final certificate. Do not assume an offer letter removes the later requirement.

Application dates need a current check too. The French page describes continuous registration for 2026 and specific renewal arrangements. Its [English counterpart](https://www.unige.ch/logements/en/bureau-logements/conditions-acces-inscriptions?ref=peridot.works) still opens with semester-based dates. Use the current directive and ask BLOG to confirm the cycle and renewal instructions relevant to your file. This guide does not choose an unverified housing deadline for a future intake.

## An offer has a response process

The directive says eligible requests are handled chronologically. When accommodation becomes available, a priority link allows the applicant to choose from the available options. It describes a 24-working-hour priority period, after which the link remains active but priority is lost and other applicants receive access.

That is different from a guaranteed room held indefinitely for you. Read the actual notification promptly and confirm the stated expiry; do not interpret “working hours” as a calendar-day rule or invent an extension. Availability may change while you are deciding.

Before choosing, check the actual room or studio, lease period, rent, what is included, access arrangements and any relevant rules for visitors or shared spaces. Those details matter to study routines and personal comfort. They should come from the real offer and contract, not an attractive photograph of another residence.

## Reservation payment and key conditions are different

The directive says a reservation becomes final after payment of the first month’s rent and verification of the information supplied. It also sets a non-refund condition for that first rent where the applicant withdraws or does not meet eligibility criteria. Read those consequences before paying; do not assume every preliminary payment can be recovered if your plans change.

Separately, the directive requires proof of a guarantee equivalent to one month’s rent at lease signing and no later than key receipt. It names a local bank, insurance company or surety company as possible providers. The actual arrangement and charges need checking against the offer and lease; this article does not recommend a provider or promise an automatic refund.

Keep the guarantee distinct from the first rent payment. Ask which funds are tied up, which payments are rent, what any guarantee service costs, and what releases the guarantee. Do not count an anticipated release as money available for arrival expenses.

## Build an evidence record and a fallback

Use a private checklist with these fields:

- Eligibility: actual institution, enrolment evidence and outstanding document checks.
- Application: complete submission, review result and any renewal instruction.
- Offer: exact property, actual response deadline and remaining questions.
- Reservation: payment basis, verification and cancellation terms.
- Handover: signed lease, guarantee evidence, key date and final enrolment proof.
- Fallback: accommodation needed if no offer arrives or the dates do not match.

Our [full-period housing guide](https://www.peridot.works/housing-budget-study-period/) helps record uncovered days. The [Geneva French-course arrival guide](https://www.peridot.works/geneva-graduate-institute-french-arrival/) explains why some students may need an earlier stay than their main semester suggests. A confirmed room beginning later does not cover that gap.

Do not fund the fallback with assumed student earnings. A residence location or university place is not evidence of work permission, a job or income arriving before rent is due. Keep the family’s confirmed funds and actual payment dates visible in the [budget beyond tuition](https://www.peridot.works/masters-budget-beyond-tuition/).

Your next action is to identify the stage your file has actually reached and the single piece of evidence needed to move forward. Ask BLOG to resolve the applicable date, document or contract question before making the next commitment.

Method: original editorial housing-stage checklist using the three linked UNIGE sources, checked 15 October 2026\. The directive governs the stated scheme; personal eligibility, room availability, actual deadlines and contract outcomes require individual confirmation.
