TUM master's applications: keep the VPD request and degree application separate

. 3 min read

Requesting a preliminary document is not the same as applying for a university place. For a TUM master's applicant who needs a VPD, the practical risk is finishing the uni-assist step while leaving the separate degree application incomplete.

Use two linked records rather than one reassuring label such as “application sent.” This guide explains a planning method around TUM's current instructions, checked on 18 October 2026. The exact programme and your qualification determine the requirements; this is not a personal admission assessment.

Give each process its own purpose

uni-assist explains that a VPD records the certificates submitted, its evaluation and the German grade assessment. Under the VPD procedure, you subsequently apply directly to the university. A completed evaluation does not itself award a course place.

TUM's VPD instructions require a separate TUMonline application when a VPD is needed. They distinguish master's and bachelor's VPD documents and require the appropriate TUM-specific document. Do not assume that a document requested for another university or degree category can fill the same requirement.

Create one line for the uni-assist request and another for the named TUM degree application. Give each its own document list, deadline, submission evidence, outstanding question and next action. The application-calendar guide provides the wider planning method; here the important addition is keeping the two processes distinct.

Check the requirement before building the schedule

Begin with the exact master's programme and intended semester. Identify the qualification you are using for entry, where it was obtained and the current instructions that apply to that route. If the requirement is unclear, seek a written clarification rather than borrowing an answer from another applicant.

Your working note should make the question easy to answer: “For this programme, semester and qualification, do I require a master's VPD, and which supporting documents apply?” Keep personal certificates in the appropriate private application channels. A public discussion does not need a transcript image or identifying document number.

Use the institutions' actual checklists. Do not assume every document prepared for the university is also required by uni-assist, or that submitting documents to one system transfers them automatically into the other.

Distinguish starting a request from completing it

TUM says the VPD request is complete only when the required documents and handling payment reach uni-assist in time. For a master's, its deadline is tied to the programme's application period. Those conditions make an account, saved draft or payment instruction insufficient evidence of a completed request.

In your private planning record, separate preparation, submission, payment confirmation and outstanding documents. Record what each receipt actually confirms. If a required item remains unresolved, keep it visible; do not turn a processing estimate into a guarantee that it will arrive before another deadline.

Make a hypothetical dependency check without inventing dates. Suppose a translation is still being prepared while you are ready to submit the university application. Which process needs that translation, and what evidence confirms it will be accepted? The useful action is to resolve that dependency, not to label both processes complete because one form has been sent.

A placeholder has conditions

TUM describes a signed confirmation form for applicants waiting for a final VPD after applying for it fully and on time. Its later grace period is conditional, including completion of the other application documents. Read the current instructions for the applicable semester rather than treating a placeholder as a general extension of every deadline.

Keep three entries separate: the degree application deadline, the evidence supporting use of a placeholder, and the final-VPD upload deadline. Check the explanation attached to any document status in TUMonline. A status label without its accompanying instruction can be misleading.

Check reuse rather than assuming universal validity

The general uni-assist page describes a one-year VPD validity period. TUM separately states that it accepts its VPD for three years if the relevant qualifications and admission requirements have not changed. Those are differently scoped instructions; do not turn TUM's acceptance period into a rule for every university.

If you already hold a document, record its university, degree category, issue date and any change since issuance. Ask which current requirement resolves your case before deciding to reuse it or request another. Preserve original academic records rather than creating your own grade conversion; the original-scale GPA guide illustrates that document discipline using a different institution's instructions, not TUM's admissions rules.

Finish by identifying the earliest unresolved action across both records. A final VPD, an application submission and an admission decision are distinct milestones. Keeping each visible makes the next step clearer without promising an outcome or a processing date.
