- Description: Monash MIT credit and exemption have different effects. Check entry level, remaining points, replacement units and funding before comparing durations.

If you have already studied computing, ask Monash which credit points would be removed from your Master of Information Technology—not just which subjects you could avoid repeating. Its published C6001 enrolment guidance gives credit and exemption different consequences: credit awards points towards the course, while an exemption requires a replacement unit without awarding those points.

That distinction matters when comparing the advertised 1.5-year and two-year routes. A familiar subject name, previous job or exemption is not by itself evidence of a shorter degree or lower total cost. Start with your assessed entry level and remaining requirements.

Official sources were checked on 15 October 2026\. This guide explains what to verify; it does not assess an individual qualification or confirm a 2027 unit allocation.

## Establish your entry level first

The [Monash C6001 course page](https://www.monash.edu/study/courses/find-a-course/information-technology-c6001?ref=peridot.works) advertises two full-time entry levels: 96 credit points over two years, and 72 credit points over 1.5 years. Prior qualifications determine consideration for the shorter route.

For the 96-point route, the published academic requirement allows a bachelor’s degree or equivalent that need not be in IT. The 72-point route specifies a cognate discipline or IT major with relevant prior study, including programming, algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems and networks, and databases. English and other applicable requirements remain separate.

Do not translate a published Australian average directly into an Indian eligibility decision. Record your qualification, transcript and relevant subject content, then use the applicable university assessment. Meeting a minimum is not an offer.

The [current C6001 Handbook](https://handbook.monash.edu/current/courses/C6001?ref=peridot.works) separates foundation, core and applied studies. It describes the 96-point entry as including all three parts, and the 72-point entry as core and applied studies. The shorter route is a different assessed starting point, rather than the same full programme delivered faster.

## Ask what each prior-study decision changes

Monash’s [MIT enrolment guidance](https://www.monash.edu/it/current-students/courses/enrolment/master-of-information-technology?ref=peridot.works) distinguishes:

- Credit: points are awarded and the equivalent unit is not taken.
- Exemption: the particular unit is not taken, but another unit must replace it; the exemption does not award points.

As a hypothetical illustration, suppose an applicant is exempted from one six-point unit and must take a different six-point unit. The subject mix changes, but that exemption alone has not removed six points from the remaining load. This explains the distinction; it does not predict a university decision.

Request a written record identifying the decision, affected unit, points awarded, replacement requirements and remaining total. Do not subtract the same prior learning twice if it has already been reflected in the entry-level assessment.

## Check your commencement-year map

The enrolment page lists foundation topics including Java, Python and algorithms, databases, and computer architecture and networks. These provide useful prompts for assembling prior-study evidence. A transcript title alone may not show the depth or assessed content of an earlier subject; keep the official syllabus available.

However, that page carries a November 2025 intake label and tells students to use their commencement-year map. Its unit list is not a confirmed 2027 timetable. The [2027 Handbook route](https://handbook.monash.edu/2027/courses/C6001?ref=peridot.works) was discoverable, but its substantive requirements were unavailable in the public text extraction used for this review.

The current Handbook also describes three applied-study options, while the enrolment explanation presents two capstone options. Do not resolve that difference by assuming every option is open to every incoming student. Confirm the applicable version, prerequisites, selection conditions and availability.

## Translate remaining points into a calendar and budget

A lower point total can change the plan, but completion also depends on prerequisites, teaching periods, unit availability and progression. Ask which required units can be taken each semester and whether any remaining unit controls access to the final applied component.

Request an international fee quote for the assessed load and intake. An annual rate is not automatically a whole-degree price. An exemption requiring a replacement is not automatically a tuition saving. Include the living period and payment timing in the [full-course budget](https://www.peridot.works/masters-budget-beyond-tuition/).

Avoiding duplicate introductory content can create room for other learning, but does not demonstrate job readiness. Choose a target task—such as testing an application or designing a database—and compare your existing assessed work with the remaining curriculum.

An industry-labelled option still needs its own access and assessment checks. None establishes a paid placement, job, salary or immigration outcome. Use the [project versus placement guide](https://www.peridot.works/industrial-project-versus-placement/) for that distinction.

## Complete a five-field decision record

Before comparing offers, record:

- Assessed entry: course code, commencement year, entry level and starting points.
- Prior-study evidence: transcript, syllabus and learning covered by each request.
- Decision received: credit or exemption, awarded points and replacement units.
- Remaining plan: required units, prerequisites and teaching periods.
- Funding effect: confirmed fee basis, living period and unresolved costs.

Obtain the applicable assessment and course map, then revise the comparison. Choose between confirmed study plans rather than treating every exemption as time or money saved.
