- Description: Budget Germany’s blocked account as restricted living funds: avoid double counting, check release timing and fund separate arrival commitments.
- Author: Santosh Srinivas

A blocked account can create two budgeting mistakes. One is treating it as a fee added to a full year of living expenses. The other is treating its balance as money freely available for tuition, a housing deposit and all arrival costs. The useful distinction is between what you will spend and where your funds sit until they can be accessed.

For a master’s applicant considering Germany, make a cost estimate and a separate cash-flow record. The first shows the expenses you expect. The second shows when money is available to pay them. This guide does not choose a bank, calculate your visa eligibility or provide a universal city budget.

## Establish the proof-of-funds requirement for your route

Checked on 12 October 2026, the government’s [study-visa guidance](https://www.make-it-in-germany.com/en/visa-residence/types/studying?ref=peridot.works) lists a blocked account of at least €11,904 in 2026 as one way to demonstrate living funds, alongside other specified forms of proof. It separately describes a visa for seeking a place in higher education, with a different requirement. Do not apply one route’s amount to every purpose of stay.

Check the current instruction of the competent German mission for your circumstances and intended application date. A threshold current today may change before a future intake. Meeting a financial threshold also does not establish that every other visa condition is met.

## Understand what is blocked

The [Federal Foreign Office’s blocked-account guidance](https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/en/visa-service/visabestimmungen-node/sperrkonto-seite?ref=peridot.works) explains that the account holds funds for daily life, with only a permitted amount withdrawn each month. Banking fees are additional. The amount depends on the purpose of stay, and the account is usually opened for a year unless the intended stay is shorter. It does not recommend a provider.

The principal transferred to the account remains your money under access restrictions. Moving it from one account to another is not itself another year of living expenditure. Your later rent, food and other payments are the expenses that the released funds may help cover.

Check the provider’s actual terms for activation, release dates, charges and closure. Keep the evidence from the competent authorities separate from the provider’s operational instructions. A marketing claim about quick access is not a confirmed date for paying your landlord.

## Use two records for one pool of money

In the cost estimate, list expected tuition, compulsory contributions, housing, everyday expenses, insurance, travel and other applicable costs over the course period. Use the exact programme and accommodation evidence, leaving missing amounts visible. The [full master’s budget guide](https://www.peridot.works/masters-budget-beyond-tuition/) supplies the wider structure.

In the cash-flow record, show the initial transfer into the blocked account, separate fees, other available funds and the permitted releases. Match releases to the expenses they will fund. Do not add the principal again as a consumption cost when you have already counted those same living expenses.

Equally, do not subtract the whole blocked balance from your first month’s tuition or deposit bill. Restricted funds can cover an expense only when they become accessible under the actual terms. A plan can have enough money in total while still lacking accessible funds on a payment date.

For a simple original bookkeeping exercise, imagine transferring an amount into a restricted account and then drawing monthly releases to pay rent. The rent is counted once in spending. The initial transfer and releases show movement and availability of funds. Account fees are a separate expense. This exercise uses no invented German rent or bank fee and is not an instruction for preparing a visa application.

## Check the arrival period explicitly

Put the dates for travel, temporary accommodation, any rental advance or security deposit, enrolment payments and the first expected account release on one timeline. Ask what documents and local account arrangements are needed before a release can occur. Keep an uncertain date marked as uncertain.

Identify which payments need funds outside the blocked account. A refundable housing deposit still matters to cash availability even when it is not ultimately consumed. Do not assume it will be returned before another bill is due. The [housing-period checklist](https://www.peridot.works/housing-budget-study-period/) can help align the accommodation commitment with your study dates.

Add a clearly identified contingency for a delayed release or a change of accommodation. Choose its purpose and amount from your actual situation; no universal buffer is proposed here. If the plan depends on access that has not been confirmed, resolve that gap before making the related commitment.

## Separate low tuition from a low total cost

[DAAD’s cost guidance](https://www.daad.de/en/studying-in-germany/living-in-germany/finances/?ref=peridot.works) distinguishes tuition from semester contributions and living costs. It notes tuition exceptions, including some continuing-education master’s programmes, private institutions and relevant state or institution rules. Check the exact programme’s fee schedule rather than treating “public university” as proof of zero tuition for you.

A visa proof amount is also not a price quote for your city or lifestyle. Obtain current accommodation information and the costs relevant to your course and needs. Keep the programme duration visible: funds covering an initial period do not automatically fund a longer degree.

## Keep job opportunities outside confirmed funding

Investigate realistic work tasks, language and experience requirements alongside course fit. Verify your actual permission separately. An opportunity to apply for a job is not earnings available for a deposit or account transfer, and employment payment timing would need its own check.

The [SRH computing employer-requirements example](https://www.peridot.works/srh-computing-employer-skills-language/) shows how to separate course learning from a specific employer’s requirements. It is not evidence of jobs for every German master’s applicant. Use the same distinction when considering whether work could later support your finances.

Finish with three totals: expected spending, funds committed to proof requirements and money accessible before the first release. They describe different aspects of the same plan. A workable budget explains the overlap, counts living expenditure once and keeps unconfirmed earnings outside the funds available to commit.
