- Description: Compare ETH's MSc and MAS MTEC by applicant stage, award and work schedule, with a curriculum-transition check for a 2027 MSc start.
- Author: Santosh Srinivas

ETH Zurich's MSc MTEC and MAS MTEC share the words Management, Technology, and Economics, but they are different programmes for different stages of study and professional life. Start with the award, your academic preparation and the working week you can realistically sustain. Do not choose between them by the shared subject name or assume the same timetable, fees or application process applies.

This guide uses ETH's official programme pages checked on 28 October 2026\. It compares programme format and planning questions, not individual admission eligibility, a confirmed future timetable or employment outcomes.

## Begin with the applicant stage and the exact award

The department describes the [MSc MTEC](https://mtec.ethz.ch/studies/prospectives.html?ref=peridot.works) as a Master of Science aimed at bachelor's graduates in engineering and the sciences. Its [admissions guidance](https://mtec.ethz.ch/studies/prospectives/admissions.html?ref=peridot.works) identifies the relevant academic backgrounds and points applicants to programme-specific requirements.

The [MAS MTEC education page](https://mas-mtec.ethz.ch/education.html?ref=peridot.works) instead describes a Master of Advanced Studies for specialists and emerging leaders with at least two years of professional experience. It explicitly presents a four-semester, part-time format.

Those descriptions help you identify which questions to investigate; they are not an admission decision. For the MAS, check the full academic and experience requirements rather than treating any bachelor's degree plus employment as sufficient. For the MSc, check your subject preparation against the actual requirements rather than assuming management in the title means a general business-entry route.

Write each full award name in your comparison record. Do not silently substitute one qualification for the other when discussing recognition, later study or an employer's requirements. Our [Swiss school and award checklist](https://www.peridot.works/swiss-masters-school-award-checks/) provides broader background for that verification.

## Compare what the study plan contains

The current [MSc curriculum page](https://mtec.ethz.ch/studies/curriculum.html?ref=peridot.works) describes 120 credit points from coursework, an industrial internship and a master's thesis. Tutorship supports course selection and specialisation.

The MAS education page describes a minimum of 60 credit points, including coursework and a thesis, and recommends reducing professional employment to 80%. These credit totals describe different structures. They do not establish that one requires exactly half the effort, costs half as much or leads to an equivalent individual outcome.

Make a separate study-plan record for each programme:

- What learning gap are you trying to address after your previous education or professional work?
- Which actual courses, research or applied outputs address that gap?
- What preparation do you already have, and what remains unassessed?
- Which elements require attendance, a host, supervision or approval?
- Which rules and curriculum version apply to your intended start?

Use the [assessment-workload guide](https://www.peridot.works/masters-assessment-workload/) to investigate the work behind a course list. A programme label or total-credit figure is not a weekly calendar.

## Part-time does not mean evening-only

The [MAS FAQ](https://mas-mtec.ethz.ch/education/faq.html?ref=peridot.works) says classes usually take place between 08:00 and 20:00\. Its recommendation to reduce professional work to 80% should not be read as a guarantee that every student's existing job will fit around the programme.

Before relying on continued employment, put the actual proposed classes, attendance requirements, independent work and thesis period beside your working hours and travel. Identify what flexibility your employer would actually agree to. Mark unconfirmed arrangements clearly.

For a hypothetical comparison, a student with a fixed daytime roster needs different evidence from someone with agreed flexibility. Neither should describe part-time study as automatically compatible with their job. This is a planning example, not a claim about either student's admission or permissions.

If relocating is part of your plan, assess the applicable residence and work conditions separately. This article does not establish that a programme format supplies a job, a permit or permission to retain an existing working arrangement.

## A 2027 MSc plan must account for the 2028 transition

ETH's [MSc MTEC curriculum-update page](https://mtec.ethz.ch/studies/prospectives/paketh-mtec.html?ref=peridot.works) says the revised structure begins in autumn 2028 and that students starting before then will transition to the new study regulations. It directs those students to plan with Student Services.

The published update includes a foundation semester and pathways, with the internship becoming optional. Detailed guidelines and study regulations are listed as forthcoming on that page. Do not construct an individual transfer or graduation plan from the summary alone.

If you are considering a 2027 start, keep a curriculum-version row in your comparison. Ask how proposed courses and practical experience would be handled during the transition. Do not assume that the current internship requirement or every current course arrangement will remain unchanged throughout your studies. This MTEC-specific update does not resolve other ETH programme questions.

## Keep funding and career assumptions programme-specific

Obtain the current fee basis, payment calendar, inclusions and full living-period costs for the exact programme and cohort. Do not copy a regular ETH semester-fee estimate into a MAS budget without checking its own terms.

If your plan depends on continuing salary, distinguish confirmed employment and flexibility from hoped-for work. If you expect the programme to support a career change, name the capabilities you want to develop and investigate the relevant employer requirements separately. Programme positioning, mentoring and an applied thesis do not establish a promotion, a new role or future earnings.

Our [budget beyond tuition guide](https://www.peridot.works/masters-budget-beyond-tuition/) helps keep those assumptions visible. Application dates also need a separate check: the MAS pages contain a dated 2026 FAQ alongside general rolling-admissions wording, so this guide gives no future-intake deadline.

Your next action is a two-programme evidence sheet: exact award and applicant stage; relevant learning; real weekly availability; applicable curriculum version; and confirmed funding. Resolve the first uncertain dependency before deciding which MTEC belongs on your shortlist.
