- Description: Separate Canada’s 16-month master’s condition for new student-spouse work permits from PGWP rules, application stages and household funding assumptions.

A Canadian master's plan can involve three different questions: the student's permission to study, the student's possible post-graduation work route and the partner's permission to work. Approval or eligibility in one column does not settle the others. Before comparing course durations or relying on a second income, make a separate evidence record for each person.

This guide is for a prospective master's applicant considering a new student-spouse or common-law-partner work-permit application. It explains a specific distinction in current IRCC guidance, not personal eligibility, an application outcome or a forecast of employment. Existing permits and extension cases require their own review.

## The master's-duration condition belongs to the partner's route

[IRCC's student-spouse work guidance](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/work/help-your-spouse-common-law-partner-work-canada.html?ref=peridot.works) says that, from 21 January 2025, a spouse or common-law partner may be eligible where the student has a valid study permit and studies in a master's degree programme lasting at least 16 months. It also lists doctoral study and specified other eligible or professional programmes. Those are separate categories, not a claim that every postgraduate course qualifies.

For the master's branch, record the actual degree and its officially documented programme length. A graduate certificate should not be relabelled as a master's, and a family's intended time abroad should not replace the programme's duration. Ask the institution to clarify an unclear length or delivery arrangement before using it in a permission or financial plan.

In a hypothetical comparison, a twelve-month master's does not satisfy that branch's sixteen-month length condition. A programme documented as sixteen months clears only that particular length question; it does not establish approval for the partner. Neither observation determines whether another permitted route exists for an individual case.

## The student's PGWP has a different duration test

[IRCC's PGWP-duration page](https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/study-canada/work/after-graduation/about.html?ref=peridot.works) describes a possible three-year PGWP for an eligible master's degree of at least eight months, or 900 hours for Quebec programmes, subject to all other requirements. Certificates and diplomas do not use that master's provision, and passport expiry can limit the issued period.

That explains why a statement about a shorter master's and a possible student PGWP cannot be copied into the partner's work-permit column. The two pages answer different questions for different applicants. A brochure saying “PGWP eligible” also does not supply the complete personal evidence for either person.

Use the existing [Canada PGWP checklist](https://www.peridot.works/canada-masters-pgwp-checklist/) for the student's institution, qualification and study-record checks. This article adds the family-planning distinction rather than replacing that checklist or presenting one shared family entitlement.

## Keep the application stage visible

The student-spouse page asks for evidence of study and of the relationship. Keep the actual documents and unanswered questions privately organised for the applicable official checklist. Avoid sending identity or relationship documents into a public student forum or treating a generic social-media answer as approval.

IRCC says the partner's permit usually matches the student's study-permit period. Its extension section has separate conditions, including that the student is not in the last term. Do not assume the initial-application explanation is also the complete renewal test, or that the partner automatically receives the student's possible future PGWP period.

Record the status and expiry date being discussed, as well as whether the question concerns an initial application, an extension or a later change of circumstances. Read the current instructions for that exact stage; a previous approval or another family's experience does not answer the new question.

## Compare the family budget without assumed earnings

Start with confirmed funding for tuition and the actual household costs of the intended arrangement. Housing for two people, insurance questions, travel and payment dates need separate entries rather than being absorbed into a single student's living-cost estimate. Obtain current quotes for the actual location and arrangement; this guide provides no universal family-cost figure.

Then keep an alternative with no partner earnings while permission, arrival timing and a job search remain unresolved. Permission to work and obtaining suitable employment are different outcomes. A partner's language, qualifications, experience and employer requirements still matter. Do not count a hoped-for salary as cash available for a tuition or housing payment.

A longer course may change the length condition relevant to the partner, but it can also change tuition, living costs and time away from existing work. Compare those consequences alongside learning fit. Choosing extra study time solely because it appears to unlock a work route is not a complete affordability decision.

## One useful next step

Add three columns to your existing [course-comparison record](https://www.peridot.works/compare-masters-courses/): student study, student post-study work and partner work. For each, record the exact official source, current stage, documentary questions and what remains unconfirmed. Link this to the [full-course budget](https://www.peridot.works/masters-budget-beyond-tuition/) with confirmed resources separated from possible income.
